Welcome to the newsletter version of my former website (that still exists if you want to see what I was up to from 2010 - 2016), Turn The Record Over. You may be wondering why I decided to make a substack newsletter instead of just resuming posting over there.

The answer is complicated, and explained in my first newsletter. But to sum it up, the times they are a-changin’. 1) I decided I didn’t want to redesign TTRO and erase all the history and memories I had there, so I’m just starting fresh here instead. 2) As I moved toward paid writing for other publications as a freelancer, I realized just how much J-School journalists looked down on bloggers—so I let fear pull me away from something that had given me so much.

The reality is, almost every journalist has their own newsletter now, and it’s no different than having your own blog—it just less of a dirty world. It’s seen as empowering, even. That’s because writing for yourself has always been and will always be empowering. I’ve missed it very, very much.

If you followed me back then, or not, welcome.

Turn The Record Over is where I muse about life as a freelancer, the arts, Toronto and anything else currently capturing my attention in this strange new pandemic world. Music is a big part, but not the only part.
